OUR STORY

Established in 2018 to showcase Tasmanian artists, The Weaver's Cottages Studio welcomes you Thursday to Sunday, from 10am to 4pm.

The cottage was built in 1838 by Thomas and Mary Burbury. Exhibitions are held in the Parlour, added in 1845, a quiet, bright room that has held a remarkable range of work since exhibitions began in 2022. Owner-operator and textile artist Kat Wittmann curates a range of Tasmanian makers' works in the historic space.

Regular makers groups and occasional workshops are also held in the Parlour. The Weaver's Cottages Studio hosts artisans during the annual Oatlands Heritage and Bullock Festival. We welcome new artists. We have a program of encouraging emerging artists, fostering skill development and are exploring sponsored training. In 2025 we proudly joined the COLLECTArt art purchase scheme that assists Australian residents in buying Tasmanian art - ask us how you can apply for an interest free loan to buy art.

What makes us

The Right people

The Tasmanian artists we have the privilege and responsibility of representing enjoy a fair rate of pay for their work on consignment.

We encourage them to develop their arts practice, without pressure. We make connections between artists and foster collaboration and skill development.

Picking

material expertise

Mostly handmade with natural materials, using traditional skills, the work we showcase is: tactile, wearable, 2D, 3D, glamorous, challenging, charming. All or one of these: find your thing.

We're fans of the repurposed, recycled, upcycled, the found and foraged.

Design

Exhibitions

Beginning in 2022 with Barry Bjorksten's wonderful large-scale woolen tapestries, the Parlour gallery has hosted fourteen diverse shows to date.

Artists featured have included: painter in oils Lena Zankl BFA, textile artist Glen Murray, photographer Lydia Peacock, mixed media artist Mahdi Chandler, textile artist Vivienne Crawford and feltmaker June Hope.

Group shows are special delight. We have hosted the Tasmanian Hand Weavers, Spinners and Dyers Guild, Devonport  based  & Art, and biannual exhibitions from the Basketmakers of Tasmania.

Crafting

Community

Sitting in the heart of the Tasmanian Midlands, Oatlands is a vibrant historic village with a lively community. The stark beauty of the cooler months shines on the middle weekend in August when we dress in our historically inspired best and showcase all things past at the Oatlands Heritage and Bullock Festival.
